HOW TO OVERCOME IMPOSTER SYNDROME IN 3 SIMPLE STEPSJul 26, 2021
Have you ever experienced the debilitating effects of imposter syndrome?
Today, I’d like to share with you my simple 3-step process to help you overcome this.
First of all, what is imposter syndrome?
Well, ask yourself this.
Have you ever had moments in your life where you wanted to show up in a bigger way?
And you wanted to serve in a bigger way?
But then all of a sudden, all of your stuff came up?
All those feelings of inadequacy
The feeling of "I'm being a fraud”
Questions like "Who am I to be doing this?"
"Who am I to be helping people?"
"What do I know?"
Feelings of unworthiness and self-doubt
If you've ever felt that way, those are symptoms of imposter syndrome.
This is probably one of the biggest challenges I’ve had to overcome and still continue to overcome, even to this day!
So I’d like to share my simple 3-step process I use to help me overcome imposter syndrome:
1) ACKNOWLEDGE & AFFIRM
1) ACKNOWLEDGE & AFFIRM
So when those feelings of inadequacy, the self-doubt, and all of those fears start to come up
The first thing to do is to ACKNOWLEDGE how you’re feeling and honour those feelings.
We live in a society where we're conditioned not to feel.
When we were young kids, we were told to…
“Just stop it!”
In essence, we weren’t given permission to feel.
We weren’t allowed to be upset.
We weren’t allowed to feel sad or even feel scared.
The message we were given growing up is that
“It’s weak to feel”
We were expected to just suppress our emotions and to just shove them under the carpet.
We were told that we need to be strong and that we simply need to
So in this step, what I'm asking you to do is actually acknowledge how you're feeling.
Honour those feelings by giving yourself permission to really FEEL it all.
Instead of just shoving it under the carpet, I invite you to truly feel all the feelings.
Now this isn’t an invitation to dwell on them.
This is an invitation to acknowledge and honour them. Big difference!
The second part of this step is to then AFFIRM that you're still a good person, regardless of how you're feeling.
So, it’s consciously affirming to yourself that…
“Even though I'm feeling really self-conscious, and even though I've got all these fears coming up for me, I still love and accept myself just the way I am.”
The second step is to ASCEND.
This involves using tools to help you to ascend these feelings of inadequacies.
I invite you to use whatever tools work for you, and a really powerful tool that I actually use is EFT tapping.
So what's EFT tapping?
EFT tapping is an evidence-based stress reduction technique that’s actually been shown to help reduce cortisol levels and stress levels.
With EFT tapping, you focus on a particular issue while you're tapping on specific meridian points in your body.
Don’t let its simplicity fool you.
This amazing modality has been shown to be a powerful tool in helping manage emotions.
So that's EFT tapping, but you can use whatever tool works for you.
The third thing is to take inspired ACTION.
This is around developing a new script and developing a new response to the fears -
The fear of making a mistake
Or the fear of failure
And then developing a new response.
Not just automatically responding the way you might’ve done so in the past
But actually making a conscious choice to take inspired action in a different way, that's going to be more empowering for you.
So that is my simple 3-step process to overcoming imposter syndrome.
